Confessions of an Rx Drug Pusher

Gwen Olson Shares her experience

Today we rely on agencies such as the FDA to make informed choices for us. You've probably heard the advertisements for different drugs on TV or Radio. We all make fun of the side effects that are listed at the end. Maybe its time to stop and pay attention to these warnings and side effects that are being minimized at the end of the commercial. Click the Read More to expand this article and watch the attached video (Video Article)

This is some pretty serious information that we need to be aware of. Maybe we should be paying closer attention to what is going on with the pharmaceutical companies and our FDA.

Chronic Low Back Pain

Does Chiropractic really help?

So you've been living with low back pain for as long as you can remember. Its been suggested that you visit a chiropractor and get some relief but you are skeptical. Sometimes the back pain is rendering you incapacitated, you can't get out of bed, yet you ignore the symptoms and live with the back pain. You procrastinate because you worry that an adjustment will be painful. (Video Article)

Can chiropractic really help my low back pain? Many patients come to Cathey Chiropractic with moderate to severe low back pain, having a difficult time walking, sitting or driving. When patients prolong their misery and procrastinate a chiropractic visit they experience increasingly worse symptoms. (video below)

Dr. Cathey uses pre-adjustment therapy to relax affected muscles which minimize the stress on the inflamed area of the spine allowing much gentler spinal manipulation. Most patients feel immediate relief after their first visit. Unfortunately since many patients don't seek chiropractic medical assistance when the low back pain first becomes an issue, regular adjustments and therapy are required for an appropriate period of time. Each patient is unique and responds to adjustments differently, some faster than others.

With regular exercise and stretching routines, the length of time required to return your low back to optimal condition will shorten. Dr. Cathey will prescribe a program designed for your specific need to encourage your body to heal. This program will include diet, exercise, therapy and adjustments as required.

I see said the blind man.

Was it a Miracle? You decide.

Doctors are a bit baffled by a man regaining sight in his eye after being blind in one eye for 12 years. It just quit working 12 years ago. Then, after a trip to the chiropractor, heaven smiles on Doug and his eye sight was returned to him. Check out the news video.

Accidental Headache

I had an auto accident last week, now I have a headache?

You had a minor fender bender car accident a couple of days ago, maybe last week. You were fine, you're thinking that there's no need to see the doctor. But now you are starting to get headaches, sore muscles, back pain. What gives?

Minor Fender Bender Ain't so Minor

Our bodies don't like sudden impacts. Getting hit with a 2 ton moving vehicle even a slow speeds our bodies absorb more energy than we should. We are talking Newton's law kind of energy, not energy from the Force or from that Monster Energy drink. You know, an object at rest tends to remain at rest. That kind of energy. Just check out the damage to your bumper, that should tell you how much energy your vehicle absorbed while you were sitting in it.

So why am I just now getting headaches and sore muscles and back pain? We've all seen the person wearing the neck brace in court pretending to be hurt so they can collect insurance money for pain and suffering. But once you experience this for yourself, you soon realize that it is not fake pain, it is very real.

When our bodies encounter an unexpected trauma, even from a fender-bender, endorphines are released from the pituitary gland and counter-act pain and stress. This is why many people can be seriously injured and not realize it. The effects of the endorphines take awhile to wear off. Some people experience pain minutes after the accident, others it may be several days.

The stress put on your neck during an accident is a force to be reckoned with. The average person's head weighs about 8 pounds. This 8 pounds of mass is sitting still while the rest of the body is thrust forward with multiple G's. In the middle of all of this action is your neck trying desperately to hang on to both your body and your head. Your neck takes the brunt of the force and is the most fragile.

Additionally, all the muscles attached to your neck are strained during the accident. Pulling the muscles in a direction that they were not meant to go at a high rate of speed. This is where the soreness comes from in your shoulders and upper back as well as neck muscles. Just like pulling a hamstring from trying some crazy stunt (like exercising) without stretching first.

Take immediate action

Don't wait for everything to start hurting, go see Dr. Cathey immediately. If you did wait until the pain has become too much to bear, make an emergency appointment with Dr. Cathey. Children and Chiropractic health

Think Kids don't need adjustments?

Kids play hard and while they are flexible, sometimes a trip to the chiropractor is what the doctor ordered. Check out this video showing how rough life as a kid can be.

Your Child's health at risk?

Too much on their mind? or Too much on their back?

school kids backpacks heavy spine damage

Worried about your child's health and what they can catch while at school? In addition to the Flu, there are other dangers lurking, even as we send them out the door to catch the bus.

When I was in school, we left our books in the desk. Even in high-school I didn't carry many books home for homework. Today its a different story. Today students not only have a lot on their minds, but a load on their backs. You would think that in our digital age of Kindles and IPads that kids would be carrying less poundage with them as they travel to and from school. Not so! 15-20 pound backpacks are now the norm. Our kids develop arms that look like Popeye's by the time they reach high school.

Heavy pack, not good on the back

The struggle between gravity and educational text books take a toll on your child's back. Compared with unburdened walking, walking with a fully loaded backpack shows a significant increase in thoracic extension and right lumbar later flexion as well as a significant decrease of lumbar flexion. In plain English that means OW! My Back Hurts!

Easy fix to a heavy burden

Wheels were invented just for this purpose. Pulling a pack on wheels puts much less strain on their young backs. This is extremely important as they are growing and developing into adults. Pulling the pack increases extension much less, far less right lateral flexion, reduced right rotation of the thoracic spine and significant decrease in overall strain of the spine. Again, in plain English Aaahhh, that's much better.

Coolness Factor

It may not be as cool to pull a pack on wheels, but the health benefits should be obvious. A back thats outa whack from backpacks pulling on their spine can lower your child's immune system leaving them more susceptible to catching that dreaded bug that everyone has.

Chiropractic

Safest form of treatment available

Posted in the British Medical Journal:

Chiropractic has long had a track record of being a safe and effective treatment for low back pain. Michael Pedigo states in an article in the British Medical Journal that 20 million patients will regularly visit a doctor of chiropractic this year. According to a study by Hurwitz et al, an adverse reactions occur in less than one in one million manipulations. Complications rates for manipulation of the lumbar region of the spine are even lower. When compared with the number of illnesses and deaths that occur from the appropriate use of prescription and over the counter drugs, the number of serious complications from chiropractic treatment is extremely low.

More than two million Americans become seriously ill every year from reactions to correctly prescribed drugs and 106,000 people die from those side effects.

A recent study shows that patients who sought care from a chiropractor where more likely to feel that the treatment was helpful, more likely to be satisfied with their care, and less likely to seek care from another provider for that same episode of pain.

Michael goes on to state that he understands that more and better chiropractic research is required just as more and better medical research is required and that he hopes that both professions will work together. It is the patient who ultimately benefits from the increased knowledge.

Oouch

I think I have Carpal Tunnel!!

Carpal tunnel syndrome or CTS is an all too common chronic and disabling condition. Pain, numbness or tingling can be caused by carpal tunnel when the median nerve which runs from the forearm into the hand becomes squeezed at the wrist.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

The median nerve controls sensations to the palm side of the thumb and fingers (except the little finger). The carpal tunnel is a narrow passageway between wide ligament and the carpal bones of the wrist and it surrounds the median nerves and tendons. When the wrist

bones move out of place, the tunnel becomes much more narrow and compresses the median nerve. Thickening of the tendons from irritated tendons or other swelling can also cause the median nerve to become compressed. This usually results in pain, weakness or numbness in the hand and wrist and can radiate up the entire arm.Pain in this area may indicate other issues, but most often carpal tunnel is the culprit. Chiropractic treatment can relieve the stress placed on the median nerve and tendons. Regular adjustments have shown to be successful in treating carpal tunnel.

image02

Carpal tunnel is typically characterized by nocturnal hand discomfort, finger parethesias in the median nerve distribution and thenar muscle atrophy. In plain English, you wrist hurts. Carpal tunnel condition is usually caused by compression of the medial nerve in the carpal tunnel occurring most often between the ages of 30 and 60. Women are about 5 times more likely to experience carpal tunnel than men. The carpal tunnel is formed by the carpals of the wrist, and id deepened by the tubercles of the scaphoid and trapezium on the radial side and by the pisiform and hook on of the hamate on the ulnar side. The flexor retinaculum which stretches between the tubercle of scaphoid and the ulnar forms a concavity (the carpal tunnel). This space is shared by the eight finger flexors and the longer flexor of the thumb.

I got the fever...

Has Your Kid Got a Fever? Don't Rush to Dole out Drugs

Parents, especially new ones, freak out about fevers. A third of all pediatric visits involve worried parents bringing in feverish little ones. But there's really no reason to fret when your kiddo's temperature starts to rise. And there's no reason to push drugs to alleviate the fever, according to a new clinical report published online today in the journal Pediatrics.

Fever in and of itself is not harmful. Even more than that, it can actually be helpful since it prompts the body to churn out more infection-fighting white blood cells. Because fever decreases the ability of viruses and bacteria to reproduce, it can actually shorten the duration of an illness.

It's not that you want your child to suffer in hopes that a cold will wind down sooner, but Janice Sullivan, a co-author of the study, says it's not necessary to ply children with acetaminophen (Tylenol) or ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) unless they're uncomfortable.

There's a myth out there that if you have a fever, you could have brain damage or seizures. That causes parents to be very anxious,” says Sullivan, a professor of pediatric critical care and clinical pharmacology at the University of Louisville. “Sometimes children with a fever of 103 will sit and play and act completely normal.” (More on Time.com: House Calls: A New Pediatric Model?)   The report reveals that parents aren't always making the best decisions for their kids when it comes to fever. They're quick to pour a shot of bubble-gum-flavored meds for any fever, even when doctors wouldn't advise it for a temp of less than 101 degrees.

A quarter of caregivers say they'd give medicine for a fever less than 100 degrees, and 85% of parents said they'd awakened their child to give fever-reducing medication. Note to parents: don't do this. If a child's able to snooze, waking him serves only to disrupt his sleep and remind him how miserable he is.

There are a few exceptions to the don't-worry-about-fever rule: infants less than three months old with a temperature greater than 100.4 degrees should go straight to the doctor, as should babies between three and six months with a fever over 101 degrees.

But after six months of age, fevers up to 103 degrees are not typically cause for concern. Higher fevers, combined with vomiting, diarrhea and no other signs or symptoms, may warrant a doctor's visit. But if Tylenol or Advil can bring down the fever, there's probably no reason to head to the pediatrician. (More on Time.com: Dad Helping with the Kids? Moms: Expect Conflict, Not Cooperation)   Bottom line: in otherwise healthy children, there's really no temperature at which you have to treat a fever.   If you decide to, however, make sure to go about it the right way. Dosages should be decided according to weight, not age. Sullivan says half of parents incorrectly dose their children.

Also, stay away from the kitchen teaspoon; it's not a reliable way to dispense liquid medication. Instead, use a measuring device you can pick up at any pharmacy. Even those are not always fool-proof, according to an analysis in the Journal of the American Medical Association of 200 of the top-selling children's cough and cold, allergy, analgesic and gastrointestinal over-the-counter liquid medications that found disturbing levels of inconsistency in medication labeling and measuring devices. (More on Time.com: Dosages for Children's Liquid Medications Confound Parents)

The Pediatrics report also weighs in on the practice of alternating between acetaminophen and ibuprofen for particularly hard-to-budge fevers, citing “evidence that combining these two products is more effective than the use of a single agent alone; however, there are concerns that combined treatment may be more complicated and contribute to the unsafe use of these drugs.”   The takeaway? As with all things relating to kids and medication, proceed with caution.

FDA still recommends flu shots, I do not!

Our kids are some of the healthiest I've been around and we do not immunize.

Fever-Related Seizures Prompt Look At Flu Vaccine For Kids : Shots - Health Blog : NPR

FDA says there have been 42 cases of febrile seizures in young children after Fluzone shots as of Dec. 13. The findings are preliminary, and federal officials are looking to see if the vaccine is to blame or something else is going on.

A blip in seizures reported among young children immunized against the flu has led federal officials to investigate if there's a link with Fluzone, the only vaccine approved for infants and kids 6-23 months old. The Food and Drug Administration and the Centers For Disease Control and Prevention say a surveillance system they use to keep track of vaccine reactions found an increase in fever-related seizures among children vaccinated with Fluzone.

FDA says there have been 42 cases of febrile seizures after Fluzone shots as of Dec. 13, Reuters reported. The findings are preliminary, the agencies said, and they're looking to see if the vaccine is to blame or something else is going on. Sanofi-Aventis, maker of the vaccine, didn't respond immediately to Shots' request for comment. There's no change in recommendations for flu vaccinations. The CDC recommends all kids 6 months and up get immunized against seasonal flu.

These febrile seizures, seen mostly in kids under 2, didn't cause lasting problems. All the children whose seizures were reported recovered just fine, the FDA said. In general advice to pediatricians about fever-related seizures back in 2008, the American Academy of Pediatrics notes: [A] simple febrile seizure is a benign and common event in children between the ages of 6 and 60 months. Nearly all children have an excellent prognosis.

About 4 percent of kids will have a seizure related to fever — usually between 6 months and turning 5. Update: Sanofi Pasteur, the unit of Sanofi-Aventis that makes Fluzone, said in a statement that the seizure reports are higher than the expected number from historical data. Still, the company said, "At this point no correlation between influenza vaccine and febrile seizures has been established." The company said it's "working closely with FDA in the investigation of these events and will thoroughly assess all cases of febrile seizure and any other adverse experiences reported following administration of our vaccine."

Glass half full folks, the sun will come out tomorrow people, little miss sunshine. You know the type. Have you ever noticed that they seem to more healthier than other people. There are many health benefits to being positive:

  • Increased life span

  • Lower rates of depression

  • Lower levels of distress

  • Greater resistance to the common cold

  • Better psychological and physical well-being

  • Reduced risk of death from cardiovascular disease

  • Better coping skills during hardships and times of stress

It not clear why people who are happy and positive experience these health benefits. When our brains have fewer issues to worry about, we are more creative. It seems possible that a happy brain can fight off health issues as well.
